For the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges, so-called toll fees are charged. The amounts of money raised through the toll are invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. How is the toll charged in Malta?
In Malta there is no nationwide toll system. Accordingly, the road network is not subject to any general toll obligation (neither in the form of a vignette requirement nor in the form of a distance-based toll). There is only a toll obligation for the city area of Valletta. This toll obligation is also referred to as a city toll, but it only applies to domestic vehicles. Accordingly, vehicles with foreign license plates as well as motorcycles and electric vehicles are exempt from the city toll obligation. This means the city toll only affects you if you wish to use a rental car with Maltese license plates.
The entire core city area is designated as a CVA zone ("Controlled Vehicular Access"). The toll obligation applies Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The toll fees are determined by the length of your stay in the CVA zone and accumulate hourly. However, the first 30 minutes are free of charge. The duration is recorded through license plate recognition. When you drive into Valletta, your license plate is recorded upon entry and exit. If you are travelling with a rental car, the rental car company subsequently receives the toll invoice.
