Slovenia: A1 between Fram and Slovenska Bistrica restricted until mid-November

On the Štajerska motorway A1 between Ljubljana, Maribor and the Austrian border at Šentilj, travelers should expect an extended construction zone at the Devina viaduct between Fram and Slovenska Bistrica until November 15, 2026. Since September 7, the closed section of around 700 meters has been extended to approximately 3.2 kilometers.

The A1 is Slovenia's most important north-south connection and part of the European routes E57, E59 and E70 – for travelers from Germany and Austria heading to Croatia or further into the Balkans, it is usually unavoidable.

Which sections are affected?

In addition to the extension of the construction zone between Fram and Slovenska Bistrica, the Slovenian motorway company DARS is planning a roughly 21-day closure of the Slovenska Bistrica North junction in October 2026. A few kilometers further south, between Slovenske Konjice and Dramlje, a second construction zone is running in parallel: there, between September 1 and October 4, 2026, four weekend full closures are planned, along with an additional full closure for a fire safety exercise in the tunnel.

Why is construction taking place?

Both construction zones are part of the ongoing general renovation of the Štajerska motorway, which DARS is carrying out in several staggered construction phases between Celje and Maribor. The work is intended to bring the road surface and tunnel facilities along the route up to current safety standards.

Anyone also traveling in autumn 2026 via the A1 near Postojna toward Koper or via the Dolenjska motorway A2 toward Croatia should also factor these two simultaneous restrictions into their travel plans.

Toll in Slovenia

In Slovenia, tolls are collected via three different methods. For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the vignette requirement applies. For vehicles over 3.5 t GVW, a distance-based toll is charged instead via the electronic DarsGo system. In addition, the Karawanken Tunnel has a separate special toll, which must be paid independently of the vignette or DarsGo.
