Slovenia: A1 between Fram and Slovenska Bistrica restricted until mid-November
On the Štajerska motorway A1 between Ljubljana, Maribor and the Austrian border at Šentilj, travellers must expect an extended construction site at the Devina viaduct between Fram and Slovenska Bistrica until 15 November 2026. Since 7 September, the closure area of around 700 metres has been extended to about 3.2 kilometres.
The A1 is Slovenia's most important north-south connection and part of the European routes E57, E59 and E70 – for travellers from Germany and Austria heading towards Croatia or further into the Balkans, it is usually unavoidable.
Which sections are affected?
In addition to the extension of the Fram–Slovenska Bistrica construction site, the Slovenian motorway company DARS is planning an approximately 21-day closure of the Slovenska Bistrica North junction in October 2026. A few kilometres further south, between Slovenske Konjice and Dramlje, a second construction site is running in parallel: there, between 1 September and 4 October 2026, four full weekend closures are planned, along with an additional full closure for a fire safety drill in the tunnel.
Why is construction taking place?
Both construction sites are part of the ongoing general renovation of the Štajerska motorway, which DARS is carrying out in several time-staggered construction phases between Celje and Maribor. The works are intended to bring the roadway and tunnel facilities along the route up to current safety standards.
Anyone travelling in autumn 2026 via the A1 near Postojna towards Koper or via the Dolenjska motorway A2 towards Croatia should also take these two simultaneously running restrictions into account when planning their trip.
Toll in Slovenia
In Slovenia, tolls are collected via three different methods. For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the vignette requirement applies. For vehicles over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll is charged instead via the electronic DarsGo system. In addition, the Karawanken Tunnel has a separate special toll, which must be paid independently of the vignette or DarsGo.
Anyone travelling through Slovenia who also has other countries on their route often benefits from the Europamaut flat rate: for 12.80 euros a month, vignettes for all eight supported countries are covered, with no commitment and the option to cancel at any time.
The Europamaut team wishes you a pleasant journey!
