Slovenia: A1 between Domžale and Ljubljana in two-way traffic until October 31, 2026
On the Štajerska motorway A1, the most important access route to Ljubljana from the direction of Maribor and the Austrian border at Šentilj, the Ljubljana-bound carriageway between Domžale and Zadobrova remains closed, expected to last until 31 October 2026. Traffic runs in both directions on the carriageway towards Maribor, with narrowed lanes available at the bottleneck sections.
The reason is the renewal and expansion of the motorway by the Slovenian motorway company DARS: a third lane per direction is being built between Domžale and Ljubljana, with work taking place in several construction phases. After the end of the construction season a winter break is planned, after which traffic is to run again on both carriageways with two lanes each.
Šentjakob junction closed
Between July and October, the Šentjakob junction towards Ljubljana is also closed, both the exit and the entry ramp. The diversion runs via the Sneberje junction. Anyone heading to destinations in the east of Ljubljana should plan to use this exit and allow some extra time.
How to plan your trip
This stretch is one of the busiest sections of the Slovenian motorway network, and traffic jams can occur especially during peak hours and at weekends. DARS publishes current updates on promet.si, and short-notice changes are possible. Important: a vignette is required for motorways in Slovenia — you can find details in our guide to the Slovenia vignette and the traffic rules in Slovenia.
There are also restrictions elsewhere on the A1: we have reported on the construction site near Postojna and the work on the Devina Viaduct between Fram and Slovenska Bistrica.
Slovenia toll at a glance
For cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period.
For trucks, buses and motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll of the DarsGo system applies instead. Its amount depends on factors such as distance driven, number of axles and emission class. In addition, a separate fee is charged at the Karawanken Tunnel (border with Austria), the only true special toll route in Slovenia, regardless of any other toll product.
