Slovenia: Vipava expressway H4 near Rebernice passable only towards Italy until mid-November 2026 AI generated

On the Vipava expressway H4 in Slovenia, travel via Rebernice will only be possible towards Italy until mid-November 2026. Since 6 July 2026, a modified traffic layout has been in place on the roughly 12-kilometre section between the Nanos junction and the Vipava interchange, because the viaduct and the slope area near Rebernice are being renovated. The expressway is the most important connection between the A1 near Razdrto and the Nova Gorica border crossing into Italy.

The current situation on the H4

According to Slovenian media reports, one lane for all vehicles is available towards Italy. In the opposite direction, i.e. from Vipava towards Razdrto, the expressway is closed: local car and truck traffic is being routed via the parallel main road. To switch over the traffic layout, individual weekends with full closures in both directions were temporarily necessary, most recently from 4 to 6 July 2026. The reports do not give an exact end date; the works are expected to last until mid-November 2026.

Diversion and truck traffic

Anyone coming from Italy who wants to drive into Slovenia should use the main road between Vipava and Razdrto, but should expect longer journey times and tailbacks. Truck transit traffic from Italy to Slovenia is being directed via the Fernetiči border crossing, while still on Italian territory. Trucks that nevertheless reach the Vrtojba border crossing are being sent back to Italy. Cars are not affected by this.

Further restrictions on the route

Anyone travelling via Ljubljana will encounter further roadworks on the A1. For the situation near Postojna, read our article on the A1 towards Koper near Postojna, and for the approach to Ljubljana, see the article on the A1 between Domžale and Ljubljana. In Slovenia too, the vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways; which vehicles fall into which class is explained on the page about vehicle classes in Slovenia. Without a valid e-vignette, fines are possible; details can be found under Fines and consequences in Slovenia.

Slovenia toll at a glance

For cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period.

For trucks, buses and motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll of the DarsGo system applies instead. Its amount depends on factors such as distance driven, number of axles and emission class. In addition, a separate fee is charged at the Karawanken Tunnel (border with Austria), the only true special toll route in Slovenia, regardless of any other toll product.
