Semester Break and Ski World Cup

Starting next weekend, the semester break begins in Vienna and Lower Austria. Many families take advantage of the start of the holidays for a ski weekend or a trip abroad. This travel fever is also clearly noticeable in traffic. From next Friday (30.01.2026), you should expect increased traffic volume and long traffic jams. The risk of traffic jams is particularly high near Vienna and on the approach roads to the ski regions.

However, it's not just the start of the holidays that is causing more travel traffic, but also the Ski World Cup in Schladming. This also begins in almost the same period (27.01-28.01.2026) and will additionally intensify the traffic congestion on the main traffic routes.

Which routes are considered at risk of traffic jams?

You should try to avoid the following main traffic routes on your journey:

• Westautobahn (A1): Greater Vienna area

• Südautobahn (A2)

• Semmering expressway (S6): towards the Styrian ski areas

• Pyhrnautobahn (A9)

• Tauernautobahn (A10)

In general, it is recommended that you travel outside of the classic travel times as much as possible and, if possible, consider using public transport.

For the Ski World Cup, many traffic routes towards the Ennstal are at risk of traffic jams. The return journey falls on the same days as the start of the holidays, so delays can be expected especially on the Ennstal road (B320), in the Schladming area, and on the Pyhrnautobahn (A9).

Getting to the Ski World Cup from Vienna

If you would like to travel from Vienna to the Ski World Cup, you should make use of public transport. Schladming train station is very well connected to the rail network. In addition, you can also use bus connections and shuttle buses from larger parking lots and surrounding towns.
