Since March 2026, the renovation of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel on the A3 motorway at Lake Walen has been underway. For travelers, it brings restrictions, as night closures are necessary and, in the course of the work, complete closures also occur. According to ASTRA, the renovation is expected to last until the end of October 2028. The main reason for the renovation of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel is the removal of the intermediate ceiling, so that the tunnel height can be expanded to 5.20 m. In addition, the tunnel's operational and safety equipment will be renewed.

Night closures and complete closures

When are the night closures?

However, the renovation work doesn't just lead to occasional closures, but regularly causes restrictions on road traffic. Accordingly, the night closures are to take place weekly from Sunday (10 p.m.) to Monday (6 a.m.) as well as from Monday to Friday, each from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. On weekends and public holidays, the tunnels remain open accordingly. During the night closures, traffic is diverted via the lakeside route into oncoming traffic.

When are the complete closures?

In 2026, the Kerenzerberg Tunnel was completely closed from April 12 to May 8, 2026, and from May 31 to June 26, 2026. The closures each ran from Sunday evening to Friday noon, so that the Kerenzerberg Tunnel remained continuously open during the busy weekends.

According to ASTRA, further complete closures are also possible in 2027. The exact schedule depends on the progress of the work; ASTRA publishes the current closure times on kerenzerbergtunnel.ch.

Renovation of structures in front of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel

In addition to the Kerenzerberg Tunnel, structures in front of it are also being renovated. For instance, the renovation of the bridge over the Escherkanal in the direction of Sargans began on March 1, 2026, and was scheduled to be completed by early August 2026. Among other things, the road surfaces were renewed; during the work, the bridge remained open to traffic with two lanes.
