Renovation of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel
From March 2026, the renovation of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel on the A3 motorway at Lake Walen is set to begin. The renovation works will, however, cause particular frustration for travellers, as night closures are necessary and complete closures will also occur during the course of the works. The renovation is expected to last until the end of October 2028. The main reason for the renovation of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel is the removal of the intermediate ceiling, so that the tunnel height can be increased to 5.20 m. In addition, the tunnel's operational and safety equipment will be renewed.
Night Closures and Complete Closures
When are the night closures?
The renovation works will not only lead to occasional closures, but also to regular disruptions to road traffic. Accordingly, night closures are planned weekly from Sunday (10 pm) to Monday (6 am) and from Monday to Friday from 8 pm to 6 am respectively. At weekends and on public holidays, the tunnels will remain open accordingly. During the night closures, traffic will be routed via the lakeside road into oncoming traffic.
When are the complete closures?
It is expected that the Kerenzerberg Tunnel will need to be completely closed from 12/04/26–08/05/26 and from 31/05/25–26/06/26. The closures will each run from Sunday evening to Friday midday, so that the Kerenzerberg Tunnel remains continuously open during busy weekends.
Even though only these complete closures have been announced so far, further complete closures in 2027 cannot be ruled out. According to a spokesperson for Astra, the exact schedule is not yet set, as it is first necessary to wait and see how the renovation works progress. If further dates for complete closures are announced, we will let you know which periods are affected.
Renovation of Structures in Front of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel
In addition to the Kerenzerberg Tunnel, structures in front of it will also be renovated. Accordingly, the renovation of the bridge over the Escher Canal in the direction of Sargans will begin on 01/03/26 and is expected to be completed by early August 2026. Among other things, the road surfaces will be renewed. During the renovation works, the bridge will remain passable with two lanes.
