Blog Switzerland Renovation of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel

Renovation of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel

From March 2026, renovation work on the Kerenzerberg Tunnel on the A3 motorway at Lake Walen is scheduled to begin. However, the construction work is likely to cause inconvenience for travellers, as night closures will be necessary and full closures will also occur during the course of the project. The renovation is expected to continue until the end of October 2028. The main reason for the renovation is the removal of the intermediate ceiling so that the tunnel height can be increased to 5.20 m. In addition, the operational and safety equipment of the tunnel will be renewed.

Night Closures and Full Closures

When will the night closures take place?

The renovation work will not only lead to occasional closures but also to regular traffic restrictions. Night closures are planned weekly from Sunday (10:00 p.m.) to Monday (6:00 a.m.) and from Monday to Friday between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.. On weekends and public holidays, the tunnel will remain open accordingly. During the night closures, traffic will be diverted onto the lakeside route in contraflow.

When will the full closures take place?

The Kerenzerberg Tunnel is expected to be completely closed from 12 April 2026 to 8 May 2026 and from 31 May 2026 to 26 June 2026. These closures will run from Sunday evening to Friday midday, meaning that the tunnel will remain open throughout the high-traffic weekends.

Although only these full closures have been officially announced so far, additional full closures in 2027 cannot be ruled out. According to a spokesperson for ASTRA, the exact schedule has not yet been finalized, as it depends on the progress of the renovation work. If further dates for full closures are announced, we will inform you about the respective periods.

Renovation of Structures in Front of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel

In addition to the tunnel itself, engineering structures in front of the Kerenzerberg Tunnel will also be renovated. The renovation of the bridge over the Escher Canal in the direction of Sargans will begin on 1 March 2026 and is expected to be completed by early August 2026. Among other measures, the road surfaces will be renewed. During the construction work, the bridge will remain open to traffic in two lanes.
