Switzerland: A6 Simmenfluh Tunnel near Wimmis fully closed until 30 November 2026 AI generated

The Simmenfluh Tunnel on the A6 near Wimmis in the Bernese Oberland remains completely closed in both directions, most likely until 30 November 2026. The Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) closed the tunnel on 24 June 2026 for a comprehensive, multi-month renovation. During this period, traffic is being routed via the parallel cantonal road.

This mainly affects access to the Simmental valley, for example towards Zweisimmen, Lenk and Gstaad. Anyone travelling there during the autumn holidays should expect a detour and extra travel time.

What is being renovated in the tunnel

As part of the comprehensive renovation of the A6 between Thun-Süd and Spiez/Wimmis, ASTRA is renewing the electronic operating and safety equipment, including ventilation and incident detection, as well as the tunnel coating and the surface layer. Because space inside the tunnel is very tight, the work can only be carried out with a full closure. Long overnight closures were considered but rejected, as they would have been more expensive and would have provided barely any usable working time per night.

Spiez to Wimmis ramp closed until 12 November

In addition, the connection from Spiez to Wimmis via the Lattigen interchange is closed. Originally scheduled to end in late October, according to the latest information from 12 October 2026 the ramp is now expected to reopen on the evening of 12 November. Traffic here is also being diverted via the cantonal road, putting extra strain on the roundabouts at the Spiez and Wimmis junctions.

Overnight closures in October and November

From 8 pm to 4.30 am, ASTRA will close further sections, with traffic diverted via the cantonal roads. The work is weather-dependent and will be postponed if conditions are unsuitable:

19/20 and 21/22 October: A6 between the Wimmis junction and the Lattigen interchange, in one direction only each time.

27/28 and 28/29 October: A8 between Faulensee and Spiez in both directions.

2/3 to 5/6 November: A6 between the Lattigen interchange and the Wimmis junction in both directions, followed by overnight closures between Spiez and Thun-Süd (9/10 to 12/13 November towards Thun, 16/17 to 19/20 November towards Spiez).

Vignette and tolls in Switzerland

As on all Swiss motorways, the Switzerland vignette applies on the A6 and A8. You don't need it on the cantonal roads used for the detour. If you're continuing on towards the Gotthard, you'll find the traffic forecast for the end of the year in our article on the Gotthard Tunnel.

Switzerland toll at a glance

For cars, motorcycles, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the vignette requirement (sticker or e-vignette) applies on motorways and expressways. Only an annual vignette is available; Switzerland does not offer shorter validity periods.

For vehicles over 3.5 t gross weight, the heavy vehicle charge (PSVA/LSVA) applies instead. In addition, a separate special toll applies on certain tunnels (Great St. Bernard, Munt la Schera), independent of the other toll product. For cars there are no toll stations and no distance-based toll; only trucks over 3.5 t pay the distance-based LSVA.
