Italy introduces new fuel discount

Rising fuel prices and new tensions in the Middle East are currently also weighing on summer travel traffic to Italy. The government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has therefore approved a new fuel discount. For many holidaymakers this sounds like welcome relief, but the measure comes with two clear restrictions: it only applies to diesel and only for a short period until early August.

Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti presented the details after the Council of Ministers meeting in Rome. Italy is cutting the diesel price by 17 cents per litre. Petrol is not included. According to the government, the price cut took effect at midnight on 28 July 2026 and is set to apply until 6 August 2026. The cost to the state is estimated at around 125 million euros.

Meloni herself wrote on X that the Council of Ministers had decreed an immediate reduction in the diesel price. At the same time, she admitted: "We know this doesn't solve the problem." However, the measure is a timely and responsible response given limited resources and a constantly changing international situation.

What exactly applies to Italy's fuel discount?

According to Economy Minister Giorgetti, the 17-cent discount applies exclusively to diesel. Petrol is not part of the current measure. For the period up to 6 August, the price at the pump should fall accordingly. The government plans to review how things proceed afterwards at a further Council of Ministers meeting on 4 August 2026.

In addition to the general diesel discount, further relief measures were approved or extended: subsidies for road transport companies as well as a tax credit for farmers. According to the Economy Minister, the fuel discount is to be financed, among other things, from variable excise duties, antitrust fines, and the fund for structural economic policy interventions. A proposed increase in tobacco tax as a funding option was briefly discussed and then dropped.

For travellers by car, this specifically means: Anyone driving a diesel vehicle in Italy can save a little at the petrol station in the coming days. Those driving a petrol vehicle, however, will not benefit from this discount.

Why consumer advocates are criticising the discount

The Italian consumer association Codacons considers the measure "disappointing and inadequate". According to the association's calculations, the 17 cents are unlikely to push the average diesel price below the two-euro mark. With the discount, the price is expected to be around 2.015 euros per litre. Per full tank, drivers would save an average of about 8 euros.

What is particularly sharply criticised is the fact that petrol is not being discounted. Especially during summer travel traffic, the price increase continues to hit many drivers at full force, including German and Austrian holidaymakers who need to refuel in Italy.

If you're driving to Italy in the coming days or weeks, it's worth taking a quick look at the fuel type and travel period:

• Diesel: The 17-cent discount is expected to apply from 28 July up to and including 6 August 2026.

• Petrol: There is currently no corresponding government discount.

• After that: Whether the discount will be extended or expanded is expected to be decided on 4 August 2026.

Regardless of the fuel discount, tolls in Italy remain unchanged. Unlike in Austria or Switzerland, there is no vignette requirement. On most motorways, a distance-based toll is charged: you take a ticket when entering and pay when leaving the route. On individual sections, flat fees or free-flow systems apply, where the licence plate is captured automatically. In addition, costs for certain tunnels, mountain pass roads or city toll/ZTL zones (for example in Milan, Bologna or Palermo) may apply.
