Gotthard Tunnel closed!
Gotthard Tunnel closed!
On the most important north-south route between Germany and Italy, the Gotthard Road Tunnel in Switzerland will be closed on twelve nights in June 2026.
During the closure periods, car traffic will be diverted via the Gotthard Pass road. Lorries, on the other hand, will have to wait in front of the tunnel. The closures apply from 20:00 to 05:00 each time and affect the A2 motorway between Göschenen and Airolo. The reason for the closures is scheduled maintenance work.
The tunnel will be closed on the following nights:
08.06.2026 to 12.06.2026 (four nights)
15.06.2026 to 19.06.2026 (four nights)
22.06.2026 to 26.06.2026 (four nights)
The closures take place from Monday evening to Friday morning each time.
Toll in Switzerland
These regulations apply to travellers who are travelling on alternative routes through Switzerland during the closures and should also familiarise themselves with the applicable toll regulations. The use of Swiss motorways is not governed by a distance-based car toll, but by the vignette requirement or the heavy vehicle charge. Detailed information on tolls in Switzerland can be found in our guide.
Digital vignette for your journey
A valid Swiss annual vignette is required to use the motorways. You can conveniently purchase this digital vignette online from us. As a general rule, vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW (gross vehicle weight) require a vignette. Vehicles weighing more than 3.5 t GVW, on the other hand, are required to pay a heavy vehicle charge. In Switzerland, only an annual vignette is currently available. Therefore, no other validity periods are offered.
Heavy vehicle charge (LSVA and PSVA)
For motor vehicles weighing more than 3.5 t GVW, the heavy vehicle charge applies: either the Flat-rate Heavy Vehicle Charge (PSVA) or the Distance-related Heavy Vehicle Charge (LSVA). This charge must be paid at customs upon entry or in advance online via the Via portal.
Special toll
In addition to the vignette requirement and the heavy vehicle charge, Switzerland also has special toll routes. These are primarily tunnels and Alpine pass roads, whose construction and maintenance are particularly cost-intensive due to the demanding Alpine conditions. An additional fee is charged for the use of these routes. The special toll must be paid independently of the vignette, meaning vehicle owners require a separate ticket or pass even with a valid annual vignette.
Car trains (car loading)
Another special feature of the Swiss transport network is car trains. They enable vehicles to be transported through mountain regions and tunnel sections that would otherwise only be accessible via longer detours. A separate ticket is required to use a car train. Especially during heavy traffic or difficult weather conditions, car trains represent a practical alternative for many travellers.
