Closure of the Silvretta High Alpine Road

The Silvretta High Alpine Road

The Silvretta High Alpine Road is one of the most popular Alpine passes in Austria and connects the Montafon region with Tyrol via the Bielerhöhe. Despite its popularity, the route remains closed to traffic until further notice. The reason for this is rockfalls and mudslides that occurred around two years ago. According to current information, the road is expected to remain closed until 2030, much to the frustration of many travelers.

Why will the Silvretta High Alpine Road remain closed for so long?

The events of summer 2024 showed that the route is exposed to significant natural hazards. As early as summer 2025, the road had to be closed again due to an increased risk of rockfalls. In order to ensure safety in the future, extensive protective measures are required. Planned measures include protective dams and, in some cases, new route alignments of the high alpine road. Since the construction decision is not expected until March 2027, reopening is unlikely before 2030.

Alternative route

An alternative option is the Vermunt cable car from Partenen. It will operate during the summer months and continues to provide access to the Bielerhöhe for visitors.
