Bulgaria: Danube Bridge Ruse-Giurgiu single-lane traffic on 19 to 22 and 26 to 29 October 2026 AI generated

On the Danube bridge between Ruse (Bulgaria) and Giurgiu (Romania), traffic will be reduced to a single lane with alternating two-way flow in two stages in October 2026: from 19 to 22 October and from 26 to 29 October, each time from Monday, 9 a.m., to Thursday, 5 p.m.

A 320-metre section of the bridge is affected. The Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Agency (API) is installing drainage systems at the bridge joints there. This is according to media reports from 13 October 2026, which are based on information from the Bulgarian authorities and the border police. The bridge is one of the most important Danube crossings between Bulgaria and Romania.

How traffic will flow over the bridge

Traffic in both directions will share one lane. The direction of travel will switch roughly every 20 minutes, with traffic signals controlling the flow. In the first stage, the right-hand lane will be closed; in the second, the left-hand lane. The Romanian border police are warning of significantly longer waiting times at the border crossing, and the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises planning the journey well in advance and considering alternative routes.

When will no work take place?

According to the report, no work will take place from Friday to Sunday. The schedule may shift in the event of unfavourable weather. According to media reports, the overall repair of the bridge is scheduled to be completed by 3 December 2026.

Vignette and toll for onward travel

Anyone continuing their journey through Bulgaria after crossing the bridge will need the vignette for Bulgaria. Its prices have risen by 30 percent since August. You can find all the rules on toll collection in our guide to the toll in Bulgaria. For Romania, the Rovinieta applies, which has been sold via the new TollRo platform since 1 October. We describe another construction site on a major Bulgarian route in our article on the Topli Dol tunnel on the Hemus.

Bulgaria toll at a glance

For cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period. Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement.

For trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll applies instead. Its amount depends on factors such as the distance driven, number of axles and emission class. Motorhomes are excluded from this and need only the vignette, even above 3.5 t GVW. In addition, certain Danube crossings (e.g. bridges, ferries) charge a separate special toll, regardless of any other toll product.
