Austria: Reschen Pass (B180) intermittently fully closed on weekdays until end of November AI generated

On the Reschenstraße (B180) between Pfunds and the border at Nauders/Resia, travelers still need to expect complete closures on weekdays until 27 November 2026. The reason is rock clearance work and the construction of a roughly 400-metre-long rockfall gallery.

Closures will apply Monday to Thursday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm as well as Friday from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm; on weekends the route remains open to traffic.

Detour via Switzerland

Anyone traveling during the closure periods will be diverted via the Austrian Engadin road (B184), a short stretch of the Swiss main road H27 near Martina, and the Martinsbrucker Straße (B185) – with somewhat extra travel time. A Swiss vignette is not required for this, as the vignette obligation in Switzerland only applies to motorways and expressways. For vehicles over 3.5 t, the heavy vehicle charge must be observed on Swiss territory. Buses over 13 m and vehicles with trailers over 6.50 m may not use the detour. The Reschen Pass route via the Austria–Italy border crossing at Reschen/Resia is one of the best-known alternatives to the Brenner motorway between Tyrol and South Tyrol.

Additional detour pressure from the Landeck Tunnel

The closure periods overlap with the upcoming, roughly eight-week complete closure of the Landeck Tunnel on the A12 starting mid-October 2026. Anyone with both construction sites on their route should allow plenty of extra time for the journey through Tyrol.

Austria toll at a glance

For cars, motorcycles, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross weight, the vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways (digital or as a sticker vignette, from the 2027 vignette year onwards only digital). It is a flat amount for a fixed period.

For trucks, buses and larger motorhomes over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, distance-based tolling via the GO-Box applies instead, with the amount depending on factors such as distance travelled, number of axles and emission class. On certain tunnel and pass routes (e.g. Brenner, Tauern Tunnel, Karawanks Tunnel), a separate special toll (route toll) applies: vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight pay it instead of the vignette, while for vehicles over 3.5 t it is charged via the GO-Box.
