Zurich is one of the most popular cities in Switzerland, and not without reason! It is the largest city in Switzerland and, at the same time, the country's economic and financial center. Add to that its beautiful location on Lake Zurich and the Limmat River.

Sights in Zurich

Visit the impressive financial center of Switzerland and admire the historic buildings. Take a stroll through the old town and pay a visit to the world-famous Bahnhofstrasse. Besides Lake Zurich and the Limmat River, the city has so much more to offer. Enjoy some time off in Switzerland – in a city that combines nature, water, and mountains.

Grossmünster

Bahnhofstrasse Zurich with tram

The Grossmünster is considered the landmark of Zurich and shapes the cityscape with its two towers, including the well-known Karlsturm. In addition to the towers, the stained glass windows by Sigmar Polke, the Romanesque crypt, the choir windows by Augusto Giacometti, the bronze doors by Otto Münch, and the Reformation Museum in the cloister are also impressive.

The stained glass windows by Sigmar Polke have adorned the Grossmünster since 2009 and depict motifs such as the scapegoat or the Son of Man, among others. The choir windows by Augusto Giacometti bathe the space in soft colors.

Visitors can reach the observation platform via more than 187 steps, offering a view of the old town and Lake Zurich. For safety reasons, the terraces are not accessible.

Please note that construction work will take place from January 2025 to 2027, and accessibility may be limited.

Fraumünster

The Fraumünster is a historic women's abbey and is also one of the city's landmarks. It is particularly well known for its stained glass windows, which combine history, art, and architecture.

The Romanesque choir, the high-vaulted transept, and the windows by Augusto Giacometti and Marc Chagall make the Fraumünster unique. In addition, church music concerts are regularly held here.

Bahnhofstrasse

Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's central shopping street, connecting the main railway station with Lake Zurich. Its centerpiece is Paradeplatz, which is also the center of Zurich's banking industry.

Zurich Opera House

The Zurich Opera House is one of the most renowned stages in Europe. Opera, ballet, concerts, and programs for young talent make it an internationally acclaimed arts institution.

Lindenhof

The Lindenhof is a green oasis in the middle of Zurich, offering a wonderful view of the old town. It is a place of tranquility and a popular meeting spot for chess players.

Nature around Zurich

Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich is today a popular excursion destination. Boat tours, lakeside pools, and culinary experiences make it especially appealing.

Highlights around the lake include the islands of Ufenau and Lützelau, Rapperswil, the Baroque church in Lachen, and the Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate factory.

Limmat

The Limmat originates from the Linth and is the largest tributary of Lake Zurich. The Linth Gorge in the Glarus region is particularly worth seeing.

In Zurich itself, the Limmat is even navigated by excursion boats in summer, offering beautiful views of the city.

Uetliberg

At 870 meters in height, the Uetliberg is Zurich's local mountain and offers a spectacular view over the city all the way to the Alps.

Whether in spring, summer, or winter – the Uetliberg is a popular excursion destination all year round, whether for hiking, mountain biking, or tobogganing.
