Special Toll in Slovenia

Last updated: 21.10.2026 Reading time: 3 Minutes

The special toll applies to certain special toll routes. These are usually tunnels or mountain pass roads whose construction and maintenance are associated with particularly high costs. Tunnel projects in particular pose major technical challenges and require the use of specialized machinery as well as modern technologies. These increased expenses make a separate toll levy necessary.

Who has to pay the special toll?

An additional fee must be paid for the use of special toll routes. Although these routes are not part of the vignette requirement or the distance-based toll, they remain independently subject to tolls.

This means: regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette or paid the distance-based toll (also known as the route-dependent toll), an additional fee is charged for certain tunnels or mountain pass roads. The special toll must therefore be paid by all vehicle owners as soon as the relevant route is used.

Please also note that the Karawanken Tunnel is reached via vignette-required motorways. From the Hrušica junction onwards, vehicles up to 3.5 t need a valid vignette in addition to the special toll, while vehicles over 3.5 t require a DarsGo device for the distance-based toll.

Which routes are subject to the special toll?

In Slovenia, there is one special toll route for which an additional fee is charged: the Karawanken Tunnel A11, which is operated by ASFINAG and DARS and connects Austria with Slovenia.

The amount of the fee depends on the respective vehicle class. For all vehicles up to 3.5 t (with or without trailer), the crossing has cost €9.00 incl. VAT per direction since January 1, 2026. Frequent travelers can purchase a points card at the Hrušica toll station: 14 crossings for €40.40, valid for 30 days, linked to the license plate. Payment can be made on-site with cash or credit card. Alternatively, digital route toll tickets can be purchased – for example, through ADAC sales outlets. With a digital route toll ticket, you can use the green-marked toll lanes and payment at the toll station is not required. The section between the border and the Hrušica junction is vignette-free.

The direction of travel is important here: when traveling from Slovenia to Austria, the toll is collected in Hrušica on the Slovenian side. When traveling from Austria to Slovenia, ASFINAG collects the toll in St. Jakob. A digital route toll ticket from ASFINAG or ADAC is therefore only valid in the southbound direction, i.e. for the journey to Slovenia. For the return trip to Austria, you pay the toll at the toll station in Hrušica.
