Do you need a vignette?

In Slovakia, vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight require a (digital) vignette. A distance-based toll must be paid if your vehicle exceeds 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. However, there are also exceptions. The following vehicle types will help you decide whether you need a vignette or whether the distance-based toll applies to you:

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are not subject to the vignette requirement.

Cars

Your car (vehicle class M1) is subject to the vignette requirement regardless of weight. Even at over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, no distance-based toll applies.

Combinations (vehicle + trailer)

Combinations with a total weight up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight only require a vignette. Combinations with a total weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight require two vignettes (one vignette for the vehicle and one for the trailer)

Motorhomes

Motorhomes registered as cars (class M1) require a vignette regardless of their weight. This means that even motorhomes with a total weight exceeding 3.5 t gross vehicle weight only need a vignette and are not required to pay the distance-based toll. However, if a motorhome over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight is registered as a truck (N2/N3), the distance-based toll applies. The vehicle class is stated in your vehicle registration document (field J).

Trucks

The same applies to trucks: above 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the distance-based toll must be paid. The distance-based toll is collected electronically using a transmitter device (known as an on-board unit). It applies on motorways, expressways and a few selected sections of so-called first- and second-class roads. On 1 January 2027, Slovakia will switch to a new system for the distance-based toll: anyone currently using an on-board unit from the operator SkyToll will need to re-register their vehicle (with the national provider CzechToll from 1 December 2026) and will receive a new on-board unit. Rates and the tolled road network will remain unchanged. For trucks under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the vignette requirement applies.
