Fernpass Toll

Driving on motorways and expressways in Austria has come with costs for many years. Drivers are required to purchase a valid vignette in order to use these important traffic routes. This regulation applies regardless of the planned Fernpass toll and represents an established practice that makes a significant contribution to maintaining and ensuring the safety of the Austrian road network. On the Fernpass road (B 179), however, the motorway vignette does not apply. It is a state road and not part of the ASFINAG vignette network.
Expected from 2029 – after a new tunnel goes into operation – a significant change will apply to drivers: the introduction of the Fernpass toll in the Reutte district (Tyrol). This measure, which is particularly relevant for travelers from the Allgäu region, brings about a number of changes, about which we will inform you comprehensively below.
The new regulation stipulates that drivers will have to pay a fee of 14 euros for the stretch between Lermoos and Nassereith. This decision was announced by Tyrol's governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) and his deputy Georg Dornauer (SPÖ) at a press conference in Reutte. The revenue from the toll is intended to finance a tunnel project that should significantly improve the flow of traffic on this important transit route. The estimated costs for the tunnel project amount to 160 million euros, and it is expected that this measure will reduce travel time by around three minutes.
The Tyrolean state government granted the nature conservation approval for the Fernpass summit tunnel on 2 July 2026. Further approvals (relating to water and forestry law) are still pending. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
Contrary to earlier considerations, no exemption from the toll is planned for local drivers. The reason for this is the European Union's new infrastructure cost directives. As compensation, the introduction of a multi-trip pass for frequent drivers is planned at a price of €140 per year (single trip €14).
For the implementation of the Fernpass toll, two toll stations in Nassereith and Blindsee are planned. The toll is also to be paid electronically. In addition, the introduction of a day ticket for drivers who want to travel the Fernpass in both directions on the same day is currently being discussed. Travelers and holidaymakers who use the Lermoos–Nassereith route on their way to Lake Garda or for excursions in the region are particularly affected by the toll regulation.
