Toll stickers in Austria

In Austria, motorways and expressways are subject to a toll sticker requirement. Anyone driving to or in Austria, or through Austria, e.g. from Germany to Italy, generally needs a toll sticker to travel quickly on motorways. On some sections of road, an additional route toll may also be required.

What many people don't know: at the time the Arlberg Tunnel was built, it was actually the longest tunnel in the world.

What types of toll stickers are available?

In Austria, you can buy toll stickers for cars and motorcycles with the following validity periods:

  • 1 day (only as a digital toll sticker)

  • 10 days

  • 2 months

  • 1 year

The annual toll sticker is generally valid for a period from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year. The 2026 annual toll sticker is therefore valid from 01.12.2025 to 31.01.2027. The 10-day toll sticker and the 2-month toll sticker are each active for the selected period, usually from the date of purchase. However, with the digital toll sticker, it is possible to choose a desired start date. The toll sticker is then valid for the selected period starting from that chosen day. With the adhesive toll sticker, the start of validity is determined by perforations at the edges of the sticker.

Please note: If a digital 2-month or annual toll sticker is purchased online from ASFINAG by a private individual, its validity only begins after an 18-day blocking period. This blocking period does not apply to businesses. The 1-day and 10-day toll stickers are valid immediately – including the 10-day toll sticker that you register via europamaut.com as part of the flat rate.

In addition to the toll sticker, Austria also has a route toll. This was introduced to offset the higher costs of particularly expensive and heavily used motorway sections. On sections of road subject to a route toll, no toll sticker is required. However, since in most cases the approach and departure route to a route-toll motorway requires a toll sticker, a toll sticker is usually also needed in addition to the route toll.

Where can you buy the toll sticker for Austria?

The toll sticker for Austria can be purchased as a digital toll sticker online or as an adhesive toll sticker at points of sale. With the digital toll sticker, the licence plate is registered online, and the validity of the toll sticker can be checked automatically via a licence plate query. The adhesive toll sticker, on the other hand, can be purchased at points of sale and is affixed visibly to the vehicle's windscreen. The digital toll sticker is more convenient, immediately valid at europamaut.com, and saves you the worry of adhesive residue or correct placement. Adhesive toll stickers can be purchased in Austria at Asfinag sales outlets, particularly at petrol stations. In Germany, adhesive toll stickers are available at motorway petrol stations, near borders, and at ADAC branch offices. A list of all Asfinag sales outlets that sell toll stickers can be found here.

  • The toll sticker must be valid and undamaged.

  • The toll sticker must be clearly visible and checkable (e.g. not placed behind tinted strips).

  • The toll sticker must be completely removed from its backing film.

  • The toll sticker must be affixed to the inside of the windscreen (not on the side or rear windows).
