Vignettes in Austria
In Austria, there is a vignette requirement for motorways and expressways. Anyone driving to or within Austria by car, or through Austria, e.g. from Germany to Italy, generally needs a vignette in order to travel quickly on motorways. On some stretches of road, an additional section toll may also be required.
What many people don't know: at the time the Arlberg Tunnel was built, it was actually the longest tunnel in the world.
What vignettes are available?
In Austria, vignettes for cars and motorcycles can be purchased with the following validity periods:
1 day (only as a digital vignette)
10 days
2 months
1 year
The annual vignette is generally valid for a period from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year. The 2026 annual vignette is therefore valid from 01.12.2025 to 31.01.2027. The 10-day vignette and the 2-month vignette are each active for the selected period, usually starting from the date of purchase. However, with the Digital Vignette it is possible to choose a desired start date. The vignette is then valid for the selected period starting from that chosen day. For the sticker vignette, the start of validity is determined by perforations at the edges of the vignette.
Please note: If a digital 2-month or annual vignette is purchased online from ASFINAG by a private individual, its validity only begins after a blocking period of 18 days. This blocking period does not apply to companies. The 1-day and 10-day vignettes are valid immediately – including the 10-day vignette that you register via europamaut.com as part of the flat rate.
In addition to the vignette, Austria also has the section toll. This was introduced to offset the higher costs of particularly expensive and heavily used motorway sections. On stretches of road subject to the section toll, no vignette is required. However, since in most cases the approach and departure route to a motorway subject to the section toll requires a vignette, a vignette is generally also needed in addition to the section toll.
Where can you buy the vignette for Austria?
The vignette for Austria can be purchased either as a Digital Vignette online or as a sticker vignette at sales outlets. With the digital vignette, the number plate is registered online, and the validity of the vignette can be automatically checked using a number plate query. The sticker vignette, on the other hand, can be purchased at sales outlets and is visibly affixed to the vehicle's windscreen. The Digital Vignette is more convenient, valid immediately at europamaut.com, and saves you the worry about adhesive residue or correct placement. Sticker vignettes can be purchased in Austria at Asfinag sales outlets, particularly at petrol stations. In Germany, sticker vignettes are available at motorway petrol stations, near the border, and at ADAC branches. A list of all Asfinag sales outlets selling vignettes can be found here.

How expensive is it to drive without a vignette?
Driving without a vignette can get expensive. Anyone who drives on a toll road without a valid vignette will receive a payment request for a replacement toll. This amounts to €200. If payment is not made, administrative penalty proceedings may follow, with fines ranging between €300 and €3,000.
How do I correctly affix a sticker vignette?
A sticker vignette that is not affixed correctly can become invalid. Pay attention to the following conditions, or register a Digital Vignette to avoid this hassle:
The vignette must be valid and undamaged.
The vignette must be affixed so that it is clearly visible and can be checked (e.g. not behind tinted film).
The vignette must be fully removed from its backing film.
The vignette must be affixed to the inside of the windscreen (not on the side or rear windows).
