Toll in Liechtenstein
What is a toll(obligation)?
Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? For the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges, so-called toll fees are charged. The money raised through tolls is invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures you a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.
Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways
Road safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent traffic systems or toll bridges
Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions
How is the toll fee collected in Liechtenstein?
In Liechtenstein there is no vignette requirement and no special toll: with a car, motorcycle or motorhome up to 3.5 t, you can use all roads free of charge. However, for vehicles over 3.5 t, as in Switzerland, the heavy vehicle fee applies: for trucks the performance-related fee (LSVA), and for heavy motorhomes, caravans and buses the flat-rate fee (PSVA). Liechtenstein collects this based on an agreement with Switzerland. However, please note that the two neighbouring countries (Switzerland and Austria) do charge toll fees.
Toll obligation in neighbouring countries
Even if you do not need a vignette for Liechtenstein and do not have to pay a special toll fee, you should also take into account the toll regulations of the neighbouring countries when travelling to Liechtenstein.
Toll in Austria
In Austria, the toll is collected in the form of a vignette requirement, distance-based toll and special toll (also known as route toll).
The vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t technically permissible total weight. The price of the vignette can vary depending on the vehicle class. The vignette allows you to use all toll roads (except special toll routes) in Austria. Fines are imposed for driving on vignette-obligated routes without a vignette. So get your vignette now for your trip to Austria with us: simple, digital and convenient from home. You can find more information on the different vehicle classes in our guide.
In addition, a distance-based toll is charged for vehicles over 3.5 t technically permissible total weight. The amount of the toll fee varies depending on the kilometres driven, the vehicle class (number of axles) and the emission class. For the distance-based toll, you need a transponder (on-board unit), the so-called GO-Box. Payment is then made automatically via the stored payment method.
There is also a special toll (also known as route toll) for various tunnels and mountain pass roads. When using a special toll route, an additional fee is charged (independent of the vignette or distance-based toll). The special toll applies to all vehicle classes and must be paid by all vehicle owners if they wish to drive on a special toll route. You can find more information on the special toll and toll-obligated tunnels in our guide.
Toll in Switzerland
Toll fees are also charged in Switzerland, in the form of a vignette requirement, heavy vehicle fee and special toll. In addition, there are also car transport services (car trains) in Switzerland, which you can use for a fee.
The vignette requirement in Switzerland applies on motorways and expressways for motor vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 t permissible total weight each. The annual vignette costs a uniform 40 CHF for all vehicle types and is valid from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year; trailers generally require their own vignette. Get your vignette for Switzerland now with us: simple, digital and convenient from home. While the vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t permissible total weight, owners of vehicles over 3.5 t permissible total weight must instead pay a heavy vehicle fee. There is therefore no distance-based toll for vehicles up to 3.5 t in Switzerland.
Foreign vehicles pay the PSVA (e.g. for heavy motorhomes) online in advance via Via; it applies for every day spent in Switzerland, even if the vehicle is, for example, parked at a campsite. The LSVA for trucks is calculated based on kilometres driven, weight and emission class, and is recorded either via an on-board device or manually via Via. You can find more information on the heavy vehicle fee (PSVA or LSVA) in our guide.
A special toll is only charged in Switzerland for two tunnels: the Great St. Bernard and the Munt la Schera tunnel. Mountain pass roads are free of charge; the only additional fee applies to car transport services, such as through the Furka, Lötschberg, Simplon or Vereina. The special toll fee is charged independently of the vignette or heavy vehicle fee. This means: even if you have purchased a vignette or pay the heavy vehicle fee, there are route sections for which an additional fee applies. You can find more information on the special toll in Switzerland in our guide.

FAQ about your trip to Liechtenstein
Answers to the most frequently asked questions on this topic.
Is there a toll obligation in Liechtenstein?
For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t there is neither a vignette nor a special toll in Liechtenstein. Vehicles over 3.5 t, however, pay the heavy vehicle charge just as in Switzerland: trucks pay the performance-related charge (LSVA), while heavy motorhomes, caravans and buses pay the flat-rate charge (PSVA).
Do I need a vignette for Liechtenstein?
No vignette is required for Liechtenstein itself. However, please note that if you travel through Austria or Switzerland, you must comply with the toll regulations applicable there.
Why is no toll charged in Liechtenstein?
Liechtenstein does not levy its own toll, as the country has a comparatively small road network. No separate toll charges therefore apply to cars. However, vehicles over 3.5 t pay the heavy vehicle charge under an agreement with Switzerland: trucks pay the performance-related charge (LSVA), while heavy motorhomes, caravans and buses pay the flat-rate charge (PSVA).
What toll regulations apply when entering via Austria?
In Austria, the vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. For vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, a distance-based toll is charged via GO-Box. In addition, there are special toll routes, for example for certain tunnels or mountain pass roads.
What do I need to consider when traveling through Switzerland?
In Switzerland, vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight require a vignette. Vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must instead pay a heavy vehicle charge (LSVA or PSVA). In addition, special toll fees apply for the Great St Bernard and the Munt la Schera tunnel.
Does the toll obligation also apply to motorhomes?
For motorhomes up to 3.5 t, no toll charges apply in Liechtenstein itself. Motorhomes over 3.5 t pay the flat-rate heavy vehicle charge (PSVA), as in Switzerland. When passing through Austria or Switzerland, the toll obligation depends on the vehicle class of the respective country.
Do I have to pay a special toll for tunnels or bridges in Liechtenstein?
No, in Liechtenstein there is no special toll for tunnels, bridges, or specific road sections. Any special toll fees apply exclusively to neighboring countries such as Austria or Switzerland.
