Vollsperrung auf der Schnellstraße Vipavska hitra cesta (H4)
On the expressway called Vipavska hitra cesta (H4), travellers still need to prepare for a lengthy full closure until mid-November 2026. Due to extensive renovation works, the direction towards Ljubljana between Vipava and Razdrto has been completely closed since 6 July 2026, mainly affecting travellers coming from Italy heading towards Postojna or Ljubljana.
Who is affected and how does the diversion work?
In the direction of Italy, one lane remains open for all traffic, while the second is reserved exclusively for emergency vehicles. In the direction of Ljubljana, both lanes are closed, and traffic is diverted via the parallel regional road between Vipava and Razdrto. Cars and local freight traffic are permitted to use this alternative route, but this does not apply to transit truck traffic: this is diverted via the Italian side and the Fernetiči border crossing onto the two-lane motorway there.
The renovation is part of a multi-year overall project, which includes, among other things, resurfacing the road, repairing viaducts, and installing wind protection elements. Once this construction phase is complete, the route towards Nova Gorica will already run over the renewed road surface.
Toll in Slovenia
In Slovenia, the toll is collected via three different systems. For vehicles, motorhomes, and motorcycles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the vignette requirement applies; the digital vignette has been available exclusively online since 2022 and covers almost all toll roads. Vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight instead pay the distance-based toll, also known in Slovenia as the DarsGo toll, which is automatically billed via an electronic onboard device. In addition, the Karawanks Tunnel, as Slovenia's only special toll route, incurs its own fee, regardless of whether a vignette or the distance-based toll has already been paid. You can find all the details on our guide page Toll in Slovenia.
Anyone travelling not only through Slovenia but through several countries on the same trip can save money with our vignette flat rate: for €12.80 per month, you can activate vignettes for several European countries, cancellable at any time and with no fixed commitment. From the second vignette activated in the same month, for example because the trip to Slovenia also passes through Austria or Croatia, you save noticeably compared to buying individually.
