Slovakia: D3 near Svrčinovec fully closed for about a week starting October 3, 2026 AI generated

The Slovak motorway D3 between Svrčinovec and Skalité, the most important border connection between Slovakia and Poland, will be completely closed from Saturday, 3 October 2026, 8 a.m. for approximately one week. The tunnels Svrčinovec and Poľana are also affected. This was announced by the state motorway company NDS.

This is already the latest full closure of this section: only at the beginning of September did the closure near Svrčinovec, which lasted over 50 days, end. Now follows the final construction stage before the route is winter-ready.

What is being built?

The NDS is completing the final stage of the renovation of the Čadečka bridge, on which work has already been carried out throughout the summer, and will then renew the carriageway over around 3 kilometres up to the Polish state border. The section closed runs from motorway kilometre 56.655 to 59.855.

Diversion for travellers

Towards Poland, traffic will be diverted via road I/11 through Svrčinovec and Zátky. In the opposite direction from Poland, the diversion runs via the I/12, where passage is limited to vehicles up to 7.5 t. Please allow extra time for the diversion routes, especially at weekends.

The D3 is one of the toll-vignette-required routes in Slovakia. Anyone using the diversion via roads I/11 and I/12 leaves the motorway network, so no vignette is required there, but it remains mandatory for the rest of the journey through Slovakia. Construction is also currently taking place at other locations in the country, for example at the Sitina tunnel on the D2 near Bratislava.

Slovakia toll at a glance

For cars (including with a trailer) and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period. Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement.

For trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll via an on-board unit applies instead. Its amount depends on factors such as road category, distance driven and emission class. Motorhomes need only the vignette, regardless of weight. Slovakia has no separate special toll.
