A10 update: full closures at selected exits (also for locals)
On the Tauern Autobahn (A 10), the familiar exit closures against diversion traffic continue to apply during the summer holidays. Detailed information on the general exit closures can be found in our previously published blog post on the exit closures along the A10. According to the State of Salzburg and ASFINAG, a trial tightening on selected Saturdays is now being added: at certain exits, the exit will be completely closed, for the first time also for locals. This will be implemented using physical barrier gates, not checks of individual vehicles.
According to the state, the trial phase runs from 1 August to 5 September 2026. The goal remains the same: to keep holiday and transit traffic on the motorway and relieve municipalities along the A 10. What changes compared to the regular exit closures?
For the regular exit closures, the following continues to apply: Anyone with an actual destination in Austria (for example as a local or as a tourist with a hotel, holiday apartment, campsite or private visit) is generally allowed to exit. Pure through traffic without a destination is meant to stay on the motorway. Proof may be requested during checks.
On the selected Saturdays at the exits mentioned, this does not apply: there, the exit is completely closed, even for people with Salzburg number plates and even with a destination address. According to the state, no staff is planned. Instead, a barrier gate will be set up.
Dates heading south: Kuchl and Golling
Anyone heading from Salzburg towards Kuchl or Golling needs to replan especially early on the following days:
Kuchl exit (southbound): completely closed on 1, 8 and 15 August 2026
Golling exit (southbound): completely closed on 1 August 2026
On these days, those affected are meant to exit the A 10 already at Hallein and continue on the Salzachtal road (B 159). According to ORF Salzburg, this explicitly also applies to locals.
Dates heading north: Pfarrwerfen and Kreuzberg
Further restrictions are planned for return traffic heading north:
Pfarrwerfen exit (northbound): completely closed on 22 August and 5 September 2026
Route via the B 311 and the Bischofshofen district of Kreuzberg: blocked off on 22 August, 29 August and 5 September 2026
This is intended to prevent returning travellers from diverting onto the B 159 towards Salzburg near Bischofshofen.
What does this mean for your travel planning?
1 August 2026 is especially critical: on this Saturday, the first full closures coincide with the congested holiday weekend and the start of the holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Anyone heading south should avoid the Kuchl and Golling exits and plan early via Hallein and the B 159 – provided that is where your destination is located.
Practical tips:
Before setting off, check whether your travel day falls under the full closures.
Allow for a time buffer and don't blindly follow navigation suggestions through town centres.
Anyone heading to the city of Salzburg should also keep the access rules for day tourists in July and August 2026 in mind.
Toll: what you should keep in mind
Regardless of the closures, the Austrian toll continues to apply on the A 10. For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t tzGm (technically permissible total mass excluding passengers, field F.1), you need a valid vignette. You can conveniently purchase the digital vignette via the 10-day vignette flat rate for Austria. If the tzGm exceeds 3.5 t, the distance-based toll with a GO-Box applies.
