Border Crossing Romania Ukraine
Important notice: The German Federal Foreign Office currently warns against travel to the whole of Ukraine. Before every trip, inform yourself about the current travel and security advice from the Federal Foreign Office. Entry into Ukraine is only possible with a passport, temporary passport, or children's passport, not with an identity card.
The border between Romania and Ukraine is over 600 kilometres long and consists of two sections: in the north of Romania (Maramureș and Bukovina), it runs partly along the Tisza and through the Carpathians, while in the east, the Kiliya arm of the Danube forms the border in the Danube Delta. Between the two lies the Republic of Moldova.
Border controls
Ukraine is not part of the EU or the Schengen Area. For this reason, passport and customs checks take place at the crossings, which have been tightened due to the war situation. Expect waiting times of several hours. Anyone entering with a vehicle that does not belong to them needs a certified power of attorney from the owner (with an apostille and Ukrainian translation).
Border crossings
Below, we would like to present the most important border crossings between Romania and Ukraine.
Siret (Romania) – Porubne (Ukraine): main crossing in north-eastern Romania (Suceava county) towards Chernivtsi, open around the clock for cars and trucks.
Halmeu (Romania) – Diakove (Ukraine): road crossing in north-western Romania (Satu Mare county), open around the clock for cars and trucks.
Sighetu Marmației (Romania) – Solotvyno (Ukraine): crossing over the Tisza in Maramureș, for cars and smaller vehicles only (no trucks), open around the clock.
Sighetu Marmației II (Romania) – Bila Tserkva (Ukraine): new road crossing in Maramureș, in operation since 7 October 2026.
Vicovu de Sus (Romania) – Krasnoilsk (Ukraine): smaller crossing in Suceava county for cars (no trucks), open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Racovăț (Romania) – Diakivtsi (Ukraine): crossing in Botoșani county for cars and buses (no trucks), open around the clock.
Isaccea (Romania) – Orlivka (Ukraine): ferry connection across the Danube in Tulcea county, operating around the clock.
Most of these border crossings are open around the clock, with Vicovu de Sus – Krasnoilsk only open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Current waiting times are published by the Romanian Border Police under "Trafic online" (politiadefrontiera.ro). In addition, due to the current war situation in Ukraine, it is not guaranteed that these border crossings are passable and, above all, safe. Nevertheless, these border crossings are important for road and freight traffic as well as for trade between the two countries.
Romania
The following section gives you an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are any specific toll-liable sections of road.
Romania: Vignette requirement (or not?)
In Romania, there is an electronic vignette called "Rovinieta", which you need for the Romanian national road network. It is important to know that trailers (combinations) do not need their own vignette, and motorhomes must have a car vignette regardless of their weight. It is common for the electronic vignette that the vehicle data and the vignette's validity period are recorded in a database, so that the consumer only receives a receipt for the amount paid, which should be kept safe. The price depends on the vehicle category and, since 1 October 2026, also on the Euro emission class, with electric cars paying the lowest rate. You can find more information on the digital vignette here. Order your digital vignette conveniently and easily from home with us.
Route-based toll (or not?) and special toll
For cars and motorhomes (regardless of weight), there is no route-based toll in Romania; you only need the vignette (Rovinieta). The distance-based toll TollRo has only applied to goods vehicles over 3.5 t since 1 October 2026. An additional special toll applies at the Calafat-Vidin Danube Bridge.
Ukraine
There are no toll-liable routes in Ukraine. You can find more information on tolls in Ukraine in our guide.
