Vignette requirement in Bulgaria
To cover the maintenance costs for motorways and expressways, a vignette requirement applies in Bulgaria. Since January 1, 2019, the vignette has been available exclusively in electronic form – sticker vignettes have no longer been issued since then. The electronic vignette (e-vinetka) must be purchased and registered to the vehicle's license plate, regardless of whether it is a short transit or a longer journey.
Electronic vignette (e-vinetka) instead of sticker vignette
The former sticker vignette was affixed to the windshield and sold in stores. The electronic vignette, on the other hand, is purchased online and registered directly to your license plate – with no sticker required. Which vehicles require a vignette – and which are exempt?
The vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, such as cars and motorhomes:
- Category B: Cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW – most cars, station wagons, and SUVs.
- Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement.
Trucks and heavy vehicles (over 3.5 t GVW)
Vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight do not require a vignette product, but rather a higher-priced category or a route-based billing system. This is not part of the vignette flat rate offered here.
Penalties for a missing vignette
Anyone driving on motorways or expressways in Bulgaria without a valid vignette must expect a fine of 300 leva, equivalent to around 153 euros (Bulgaria replaced the lev with the euro upon joining the eurozone on 1 January 2026). Fixed cameras are used for enforcement, automatically matching the license plate with the database.
