Slovenia: Annual vignettes now valid for 16 instead of 12 months

Anyone who holds an annual vignette for Slovenia shouldn't be surprised if it remains valid longer than originally expected. By emergency law, Slovenia has extended the validity of all annual e-vignettes still valid on December 1, 2025 by four additional months. This turns the 12-month validity period into a 16-month validity period, at no extra cost whatsoever. An annual vignette purchased on December 1, 2025 will therefore no longer be valid until December 1, 2026, but only until April 1, 2027.

For drivers who regularly travel through Slovenia towards Croatia, or in the other direction towards Austria and Italy, this is basically good news: four months of additional validity without a single extra cent. Nevertheless, the change is currently causing some confusion, as many customers expect their vignette to expire after exactly twelve months as usual, and are puzzled as to why it is suddenly valid for longer.

What exactly has been extended, and who does it apply to?

The extension applies exclusively to annual e-vignettes for vehicles, motorhomes and motorcycles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight that are still active on December 1, 2025. In practical terms, this means: every annual vignette whose regular 12-month term overlaps with December 1, 2025 automatically receives four additional months on top, without any action or application required on the holder's part. No new booking, no repeat payment and no contact with the provider is necessary; the extension is applied directly in the background to the license plate.

Shorter terms such as weekly or monthly vignettes are not affected; these will continue to expire as normal after the originally booked period. Nothing changes either for vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, which instead use the distance-based DarsGo toll.

Why the confusion occurs so frequently

The most common reaction to the extension is uncertainty: customers check their license plate, see a validity period that extends well beyond the expected date, and initially suspect an error in the registration or a duplicate booking. In fact, in such cases it is simply the statutory extension at work, not a technical fault. Anyone unsure whether their own vignette is affected can check the validity directly online using their license plate at any time; no additional proof or new order is required for this.

Tolls in Slovenia: vignette, DarsGo and Karawanks Tunnel at a glance

Slovenia collects its tolls via three different systems. The vignette applies to vehicles, motorhomes and motorcycles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, has been available exclusively in digital form since 2022, and covers almost all toll roads with a single purchase. For heavier vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the distance-based route-related toll applies instead, also known in Slovenia as the DarsGo toll, which is billed automatically via an electronic on-board unit. In addition, there is the Karawanks Tunnel, Slovenia's only special toll route, an important connection to Austria, for which a separate fee is payable in addition to the vignette or the route-related toll.
