Gotthard traffic jam end of May: traffic chaos possible due to Brenner closure
Closure of the A13: Consequences for the Gotthard
Restrictions on important travel routes heading south
At the end of May, motorists must once again prepare for a traffic-heavy weekend around the Gotthard. The reason is a planned demonstration in Austria, which will temporarily close the important Brenner Motorway (A13) completely. The closure affects 30 May from 11:00 to 19:00. Further information on this closure can be found in our news post on the full closure of the Brenner Motorway.
More traffic expected on the Gotthard route
Due to the closure, many travellers are likely to switch to alternative routes, particularly the Gotthard Tunnel and the San Bernardino route in Switzerland. Traffic experts therefore expect increased traffic volume and longer waiting times around the Gotthard Tunnel. It is therefore recommended to start the journey as early in the morning as possible or wait until the evening.
Gotthard Pass road as an additional alternative
Just in time for the expected travel traffic, the Gotthard Pass road is also reopening to traffic. Due to the low-snow winter, the pass road can be opened earlier than usual, offering an additional alternative to the tunnel. Nevertheless, increased traffic volume is expected on the main Alpine routes around Whitsun and Corpus Christi.
Note the toll requirements in Austria and Switzerland
