This full closure is being initiated by a citizens' initiative opposed to the planned Fernpass tunnel. The demonstration will take place from 10:00 to 12:00, meaning the route will not be passable during this period. As heavy traffic volumes are expected, congestion is anticipated both before and after the closure. According to current information, a further demonstration on the same route may also take place in August 2026.
B179 Closure in Tyrol: Timing and Duration
Authorities expect long tailbacks ahead of the full closure, particularly during the morning hours. Even after the B179 reopens, patience will be required as traffic will only dissipate slowly. Since this day is also a major travel day, a wide detour is recommended to avoid potential traffic jams or long waiting times.

Fernpass Diversion: Possible Alternatives
If you are planning a trip at the time mentioned, you should choose an alternative route well in advance. Along the Fernpass, the nearest bypass option is the route via Mittenwald – Seefeld – Zirler Berg to the Inn Valley Motorway (A12); however, this route is only partially suitable for vehicles with trailers, as there is a northbound ban on trailers. In addition, the risk of congestion there is also high.
Further alternatives:
- Via the Memmingen junction (A7/A96) towards Lindau and then on the Austrian Rhine Valley Motorway (A14) to the Arlberg expressway S16
- Via the Ulm junction (A8/A99) and Munich to the Inn Valley triangle (A8/A93) near Rosenheim, then via Kiefersfelden to the A12 (Inn Valley Motorway)
These diversions are possible in both directions. Those who allow a little extra time and set off early can better avoid holiday traffic.
Toll Information
The B179 is often regarded as a toll-free connection within Austria when travelling directly from Füssen/Reutte over the Fernpass towards Nassereith. However, as soon as you divert onto motorways such as the A12 or cover further distances in Austria, the vignette requirement for vehicles up to 3.5 t permissible gross weight applies. For heavier vehicles (over 3.5 t permissible gross weight), a distance-based toll using the GO-Box is required instead.
