Slovenia: Full closure on the Dolenjska motorway towards Ljubljana from September 2
On the Dolenjska motorway, the most important link between Ljubljana, Novo Mesto and the Obrežje border crossing towards Zagreb, an additional section will be completely closed from 2 September 2026: affected are the exit from the direction of Novo Mesto and the entrance towards Ljubljana at Bič and Ivančna Gorica. The closure is expected to last until the end of September and affects a stretch where tailbacks of up to 45 minutes are already being reported during rush hour. Anyone travelling through Slovenia towards the Croatian coast should factor this section of the E70 route into their travel planning.
The Dolenjska motorway is the Slovenian section of the E70 route between Ljubljana and the Obrežje border crossing, over which a large part of holiday traffic from Central Europe heads towards the Croatian coast. The additional full closure from 2 September comes on top of an already tense traffic situation, as the route is regularly overloaded even under normal operating conditions.
Independently of the new closure, Slovenian traffic services recently also reported a heavily congested motorway network, particularly towards Austria, for example on the coastal motorway near Postojna and Vrhnika, around the Ljubljana ring road and in the Karawanks area. Anyone returning from Croatia in the coming days should allow for additional travel time.
Toll in Slovenia
In Slovenia, the toll is collected using three forms of charging. For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the vignette applies. For vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the distance-based toll is instead charged via the electronic DarsGo system, which is based on kilometres driven, vehicle class and emission class. In addition, the Karavanke Tunnel is Slovenia's only special toll route, which must be paid independently of the vignette or DarsGo. More on this in our guide Toll in Slovenia.
Anyone travelling south through neighbouring countries as well often benefits from the Europe Flat Rate for €12.80 per month: vignettes for several countries can be activated via a single flat rate, and from the second vignette needed in the same month, it clearly pays off compared to buying individually.
