Day eleven brings one of the absolute highlights of my journey: a ride on the legendary Glacier Express. Even as I board the train, I can feel the excitement building for one of the most spectacular train routes in the world. The panoramic windows offer an incomparable view of the majestic Alps, and I lean back to fully enjoy this unique experience. The train crosses the impressive Landwasser Viaduct, which seems like a masterpiece of engineering, and takes us through the Oberalp Valley. The dramatic backdrop with steep gorges and high mountains captivates me completely.
In Andermatt, my train ride ends, and for a brief moment, I wonder what comes next. But no worries – while I have been enjoying this breathtaking train journey, my car has been brought here by a service, so I can continue my round trip seamlessly. This small but important logistical touch ensures that everything runs smoothly.
The journey continues through the dramatic Schöllenen Gorge, passing the famous Devil’s Bridge. The ride through the Grindelwald Valley once again offers spectacular views of the Wetterhorn peaks. Finally, I reach Lauterbrunnen, where the imposing Staubbach Falls plunge 300 meters into the valley – a truly magical place to end the day. My cozy hotel, the Romantik Schweizerhof in Grindelwald, is already awaiting me.
The twelfth day of my journey begins leisurely, and I look forward to spending the entire day in Grindelwald, one of the most charming villages in the Bernese Alps. The fresh mountain air and the stunning landscape invite me to enjoy the day at a relaxed pace and explore the surroundings. One of the main attractions here is the cogwheel train ride to the Jungfrau – an absolute must for anyone who loves alpine views. I briefly consider whether to take the journey to Jungfraujoch, the "Top of Europe," where a breathtaking panorama awaits. Once at the top, there are not only the snow-covered peaks to admire, but also the famous Ice Palace and the Sphinx Observation Deck. The view here is truly spectacular, and it’s hard to put into words the vastness and beauty of the Alps.
Alternatively, the many hiking trails that wind through the green valleys and up into the mountains beckon. Nature lovers will be in their element, as the flora and fauna are incredibly diverse. For those seeking a more relaxed pace, there’s the option to wander through the village, visit the picturesque shops, or simply sit in a café and take in the stunning surroundings.
Grindelwald offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation – the ideal place to unwind and fully enjoy the final days of the trip. In the evening, I return to the Romantik Schweizerhof and wind down the day in peace.
