A certain amount of preparation is therefore advisable to ensure a smooth trip. That's why in this article you'll find everything you need to know about charging and refueling in Romania.

The most important facts

• Refueling in Romania is largely straightforward: there is an extensive network of gas stations that covers both cities and rural regions well. However, rural gas stations are generally not open around the clock.

• Charging in Romania is not quite as easy, especially in rural areas. In cities you'll find some charging stations, while charging options for your electric car are not well developed in the countryside.

• Fuel prices in Romania vary depending on the region and provider, with petrol and diesel often cheaper than in Germany.

• Charging stations and gas stations offer different payment methods. Usually you pay by credit card or special charging cards. To be safe, also bring some cash (RON).

• For national roads and motorways you need a vignette, which you can purchase directly from us.

Overview of the refueling and charging network in Romania

Refueling in Romania is largely very well organized. Especially along main roads, in cities, and on motorways, you'll find a dense network of gas stations. In rural regions, gas stations are usually open until about 9 pm.

The network for charging electric cars is also being continuously expanded. In cities and along major traffic routes, there are already some charging stations. In rural areas, however, these are still scarce, which is why good route planning is recommended.

You should not currently travel to Romania with a hydrogen car, as no hydrogen filling stations are available.

Refueling in Romania

Refueling in Romania is simple and well organized. Common gas station chains include Lukoil, Shell, BP, Petrom, ÖMV, Rompetrol, and MOL. Many stations offer additional services such as car washes, small shops, or a petrol attendant.

The terms for fuels are:

• Super Plus: Benzina Super Plus

• Diesel: Motorina

Payment methods at gas stations

Gas stations and charging stations offer various payment options. As a rule, you can pay in cash or by credit card, and in some cases also via Apple Pay or Google Wallet. For rural regions, it's advisable to always carry some cash (RON) with you.

Charging an electric car

Romania is increasingly investing in the expansion of charging infrastructure. The goal is to reduce the maximum distance between charging stations to around 60 km. Currently, however, coverage is not yet nationwide.

Key investors include Kaufland, E.ON, Lidl, and Eldrive. Further projects are already planned.

Especially in rural areas and along motorways, charging stations are still not sufficiently available. In cities, the situation is significantly better, but you should still check your route in advance.
