Cape Kaliakra is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The coast is located 80 km from the country’s capital and is part of the northern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. Nature and Archaeological Reserve

Cape Kaliakra is not only a nature reserve, but also considered an archaeological site. The reserve has existed since 1941 and attracts numerous visitors every year who come to admire its 600-hectare area. The history of this place dates back to ancient times, when in the 4th century BC a Thracian fortress called Trisis already stood on the cape. Later, remains from the Roman, Byzantine, and Bulgarian periods followed. However, the history of this unique place did not end there. In the 14th century, Kaliakra became the capital of the Despotate of Dobruja under Dobrotitsa. In addition to the influences of various rulers, the site is also known for the Battle of Kaliakra. On July 31, 1971, the Russian fleet defeated the Ottoman fleet at this location. The Ushakov Monument still commemorates this historical event today.

In addition to the ruins of the past, you will be fascinated by the diverse flora and fauna. Over 400 plant species adorn the reserve and more than 310 bird species enrich this unique natural environment. Discover cormorants or falcons soaring high above you and enjoy the calming atmosphere of nature. Not only the birds on land will impress you, but also the view from the cliffs and the animals you may spot in the sea. Keep an eye out for dolphins, seals, and seabirds.

In addition to the Ushakov Monument, there are many other highlights to discover at Cape Kaliakra. Explore the ruins of an ancient fortress or take memorable photos at the defensive walls with their round tower and arched gates. Also worth seeing is the Chapel of St. Nicholas and the small historical museum, where you can learn more about the history of the cape. The Legends of Cape Kaliakra

Cape Kaliakra is considered a legendary place where you will encounter various myths. The most famous are the Legend of the 40 Maidens, the Legend of Saint Nicholas, and the Legend of Lysimachus’ Treasure.

The Legend of the 40 Maidens tells the story of 40 Bulgarian maidens who were captured by Ottoman troops. Rather than submit to captivity, enslavement, and forced marriage, they chose to preserve their honor and die with dignity. They braided their hair into a long rope and jumped hand in hand from the steep cliffs into the endless Black Sea. To this day, an obelisk at the entrance, also known as the Gate of the 40 Maidens, commemorates their sacrifice. The legend is often seen as a symbol of love of freedom, courage, and self-sacrifice.

The Legend of Saint Nicholas tells of the patron saint of sailors, who is said to have been chased across the cape by Ottoman soldiers. As they nearly caught him, he prayed and a cave opened up, allowing him to disappear. A small chapel now stands at the spot where the cave is said to have formed and serves as a place of quiet prayer.

The Legend of Lysimachus’ Treasure recounts the tale of Lysimachus, successor of Alexander the Great, who allegedly fled with a vast treasure of gold. To escape his pursuers, he is said to have hidden in the caves of Cape Kaliakra. He was never seen again. To this day, it is believed that his treasure lies hidden somewhere within the cape. Some of the known caves can still be visited, although many are no longer accessible due to the risk of collapse. For centuries, people have tried to find the treasure, but without success to this day.

Best Time to Visit

You can reach the reserve via the village of Bulgarevo and park on site. The best time to visit Cape Kaliakra is from spring to autumn. Please note that it can be more crowded during the holiday season, especially in summer. A special highlight of the cape is its unique sunsets, so plan your time well to enjoy one of the spectacular sunsets. If you drive there yourself, this attraction is definitely one of the more affordable experiences in the country.

Near Cape Kaliakra

There are also several unique places worth visiting on the way to the cape. Be sure to visit the Aladzha Cave Monastery and the town of Balchik. The Bolata Gorge is also very interesting. If you enjoy seafood, especially mussels, you should not miss the excellent mussel restaurant Dalboka.

Aladzha Cave Monastery

The Aladzha Monastery is located only 15 km from Varna and can easily be combined with a trip to Cape Kaliakra. This medieval cave monastery dates back to the 12th century and was used by Orthodox Christian monks. You can explore remains such as chapels carved into the rock, living quarters, a crypt, and a refectory across two levels. Some wall paintings still survive, although only fragments remain. During summer evenings, atmospheric light and sound shows are often held here, making the experience even more unique.

Balchik

Balchik is located 30 km from Cape Kaliakra and is also known as the “White Town by the Sea.” The coastal town is famous for its white limestone hills and was originally a Thracian settlement. Later, it was inhabited by Greeks, Romans, and Ottomans. Particularly worth seeing is the Palace of Queen Marie of Romania, which served as a summer residence by the sea. The diverse Botanical Garden is also impressive, featuring over 3,000 plant species and the second-largest cactus collection in Europe. You should also stroll along the seafront promenade and relax in one of the many cafés. The charming old town with its beautiful sea view will surely captivate you.

Bolata Gorge

The Bolata Gorge is located on the northern coast just a few kilometers from Cape Kaliakra. It is part of the Kaliakra reserve and is often used as a birdwatching site. The gorge forms a semicircular bay surrounded by reddish-brown cliffs. Bolata Beach is a small gem on the northern coast and offers the ultimate holiday feeling. Enjoy the fine sandy beach and the calm, clear waters that are perfect for snorkeling. A small river flowing into the bay makes this place even more unique.

Dalboka (Mussel Restaurant)

This mussel restaurant is located on the steep coast, directly below Cape Kaliakra, and can be reached from the village of Balgarevo. Taste the fresh Black Sea mussels and enjoy them on the breathtaking sea-view terrace right above the water. In addition to mussels, the restaurant offers delicious shrimp, tasty fish and squid, and various seafood platters. There are also vegetarian and gluten-free options. We recommend reserving a table on the terrace in advance, especially during the high season, as the restaurant fills up quickly.
