Vignette Requirement in Austria Explained
Since 1997, the vignette obligation has applied in Austria for motorways and expressways – commonly known as the motorway vignette or "Pickerl". Mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes of technically permissible total mass (tzGm).

Which Vehicles Need a Vignette?
The vignette requirement depends on the technically permissible maximum mass (tzGm) of the vehicle:
- Motorcycles need their own motorcycle vignette.
- Cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes tzGm need the standard car vignette.
- Combinations (car with trailer): The trailer does not need its own vignette. What matters is the towing vehicle – up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight requires a vignette, above that the GO toll via GO-Box applies.
- Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes tzGm (trucks) are subject to their own distance-based tolling instead of the vignette.
