Motorists must prepare for another congestion-heavy weekend around the Gotthard at the end of May. The reason is a planned demonstration in Austria, which will temporarily cause a complete closure of the important Brenner motorway (A13). The closure affects 30 May from 11:00 to 19:00. More traffic expected on the Gotthard route
Due to the closure, many travellers are likely to divert to alternative routes, in particular the Gotthard Tunnel and the San Bernardino route in Switzerland. Traffic experts therefore anticipate increased traffic volumes and longer waiting times around the Gotthard Tunnel. It is therefore recommended to start your journey as early in the morning as possible, or not until the evening.
The Gotthard Pass road as an additional alternative
Just in time for the expected travel traffic, the Gotthard Pass road is also reopening. Thanks to the low-snow winter, the pass road can be opened earlier than usual, offering an additional alternative to the tunnel. Nevertheless, increased traffic volumes are expected on the most important Alpine routes around Whitsun and Corpus Christi.
