Border crossings Romania and Moldova

The Republic of Moldova borders Romania to the west and is otherwise completely surrounded by Ukraine. The border between Romania and Moldova is approximately 600 kilometres long and runs along the Prut River.

Border controls

Border checks take place at the crossings between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Moldova is not part of the European Union, so passport and customs checks are part of the border crossing process. Accordingly, travellers must carry passports and, if required, a visa, depending on their country of origin and the purpose of their stay.

In addition, the number of refugees has increased due to the war between Russia and Ukraine. As a result, many people try to travel through Moldova via Romania further to the north, west and south of Europe.

Important border crossings

Below we would like to present the most important border crossings between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

  • Albiţa - Leuşeni: This border crossing is located on the European route E581 and is an important transport hub for goods and passenger traffic. However, due to its importance, traffic jams often occur, as this bridge also provides direct access to Moldova’s capital.
  • Sculeni - Sculeni: This border crossing is located on the E58 and also plays a crucial role for goods and passenger traffic. The E58 is also used as a direct connection from Vienna through Slovakia via Ukraine, Romania and Moldova all the way to Russia. Through this border crossing you can reach, in addition to the capital of the Republic of Moldova, the largest city Bălṭi.
  • Stânca - Costesti: This border crossing connects the town of Stânca (Romania) with the town of Costesti (Moldova) via a barrage (river dam).
  • Ungheni - Ungheni: A rail connection runs via this important border crossing, enabling a link between the Moldovan capital Chișinău and the Romanian railway network. The line therefore runs over the Podul Eiffel bridge, through which the Romanian university city can be reached easily.
  • Oancea - Cahul: This border crossing connects the city of Cahul (Moldova) with Oancea (Romania) via the trunk road R34. Cahul is known as the third-largest city in the Republic of Moldova and is located in the southwest.
  • Radauti Prut - Lipcanii: This border crossing provides a connection between Lipcani (a city in Moldova) and Rădăuți-Prut (in northern Romania). Although this crossing is lightly used, it is still important due to the Drum Public National M5, which is used as a feeder route into Ukrainian territory. Due to the war, however, there is currently hardly any passenger or freight traffic at this location.
  • Giurgiulești - Galati: This small border crossing connects Giurgiulești (Moldova) and Galati (Romania) and has special importance because it represents the Republic of Moldova’s only access to the Danube and is also a border point with Ukraine.

Romania

The following section gives you an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll road sections.

Romania: vignette requirement (or not?)

In Romania, there is an electronic vignette called “Rovinieta”, which you need for the Romanian national road network. It is important to know that trailers (vehicle combinations) do not require a separate vignette and that motorhomes, regardless of their weight, must have a passenger-car vignette. It is common for the electronic vignette to record vehicle data and the vignette’s validity period in a database, so that the customer only receives a receipt for the paid amount, which should be kept. Depending on the vehicle class, you must choose a different vignette and prices vary. You can find more information about the digital vignette here. Order your digital vignette easily and conveniently from home with us.

Distance-based toll

In Romania, there is no distance-based toll, but you need a digital vignette and must take additional fees into account when crossing the Danube.

Danube crossing: bridge toll (special toll)

Please note that additional fees apply when crossing the Danube. The river flows within Romania and separates the two countries (Romania and Bulgaria) from each other. If you want to use one of the many bridges or the ferry to cross, additional fees apply.

Moldova

The following section gives you an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll road sections.

Moldova: vignette requirement (or not?)

In Moldova, a vignette is required and it covers all roads. Motorcycles are exempt, as they do not need a vignette.

Distance-based toll

In Moldova, there is no distance-based toll, however you must purchase a vignette to use the roads.
