The Romanian–Serbian border is approximately 476 kilometers long. It runs along western Romania and eastern Serbia and follows rivers such as the well-known Danube.
Border controls take place between Romania and Serbia. This procedure is necessary, among other reasons, due to the refugee situation. Therefore, you must carry and present your passport. In addition, a visa may be required depending on your nationality and the purpose of your trip.
You should therefore allow extra time at the border crossings, as significant waiting times can regularly occur when entering and leaving the country.
There are numerous border crossings between Romania and Serbia that are important for road traffic. The following border crossings are relevant for international road and travel traffic. In addition to these four crossings, there are other border crossing options that are mainly important for local traffic.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are specific toll roads.
In Romania, there is an electronic vignette called “Rovinieta”, which is required for the Romanian national road network. It is important to note that trailers (vehicle combinations) do not require a separate vignette and that motorhomes must use a passenger car vignette regardless of their weight.
With the electronic vignette, vehicle data and the validity period are stored in a database, meaning the customer only receives a receipt for the paid amount, which should be kept.
Depending on the vehicle class, you must select a different vignette and prices may vary. Further information about the digital vignette can be found here.
In Romania, there is no distance-based toll. However, you need a digital vignette and must pay additional fees when crossing the Danube.
Please note that additional fees apply when crossing the Danube. These are collected within Romania and separate the two countries (Romania and Bulgaria). If you use one of the many bridges or a ferry to cross, additional charges will apply.

In Serbia, there is no vignette requirement. Instead, a distance-based toll is charged.
The distance-based toll depends on the distance traveled and can be paid at toll stations or via electronic systems.
Payment is made at toll stations by taking a ticket and paying when exiting the motorway. Depending on the route and the vehicle or vehicle class, the toll amount may be higher.
At toll stations, you can pay in cash, by credit card, or by debit card. Payment of the distance-based toll in euros is also possible; however, please note that change will be given in Serbian dinars.
