The special toll applies to specific toll routes. These special toll routes are often tunnels or mountain pass roads that are associated with higher construction and maintenance costs. In particular, the construction of tunnels involves major technical challenges, which require specialised machinery and technologies and therefore result in higher costs.
To use special toll routes, an additional fee must be paid. Although these routes are exempt from the vignette requirement and distance-based tolls, they are still subject to toll charges. This means that regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette or paid a distance-based toll, an additional amount must be paid for certain tunnels and mountain passes. Accordingly, every vehicle owner must pay the special toll as soon as a special toll route is used. It should be noted that most special toll routes can only be accessed via vignette-required access roads or distance-based toll access roads. Therefore, it generally makes sense to obtain a vignette or an electronic toll device for distance-based toll collection, regardless of the special toll route.
In Slovenia, there is only one special toll route for which additional charges apply. This is the Karawanks Tunnel A11 (operated by ASFINAG and DARS), which connects Austria with Slovenia. The toll rates for using the Karawanks Tunnel vary depending on the vehicle class. Payment can be made on site in cash or by credit card. In addition, digital toll tickets can be purchased from ADAC sales outlets. With a digital toll ticket, you can use the green-marked toll lanes, meaning that payment of the toll on site is not required.
