The Czech Republic is especially known for the unique city of Prague, its beer culture, castles and palaces, music and culinary specialties. However, the country’s ski resorts are also very impressive, offering a wide range of options and activities. In this article, we introduce some of the most popular ski resorts and hope to help you find your perfect winter destination.
The Špindlerův Mlýn ski resort is located in the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše). It is one of the most famous winter sports destinations in the Czech Republic and is ideal for families with children. The season usually runs from early December to early April. Depending on the location, elevations range from 715 m to 1,235 m. The resort offers around 28 km of slopes (approximately 10 km easy, 16 km intermediate and nearly 2 km black runs), modern lift systems, après-ski, snow parks and night skiing. About 95% of the slopes are artificially snow-covered, ensuring a reliable season.
Away from the slopes, visitors can enjoy more than 85 km of cross-country trails, as well as marked routes for ski touring and winter hiking through the beautiful Krkonoše landscape.
The resort is also well known for hosting international winter sports events, such as World Cup races and various snowboard competitions.
With around 8 km of slopes, Harrachov is one of the smaller ski resorts in the Czech Republic. The season typically lasts from mid-December to mid-March. Most slopes are easy to intermediate, making the resort perfect for beginners and families with children. There is also a 1.3 km long slope designed for advanced skiers.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Harrachov offers more than 100 km of groomed cross-country trails. A small snow park with rails and jumps is ideal for snowboarders and freestyle enthusiasts.
If you want to take a break from skiing, you can enjoy a walk to the Mumlavský Waterfall. The waterfall is about ten meters wide and easily accessible even in winter, offering a peaceful nature experience.
Černá hora – Janské Lázně is the largest interconnected ski area in the Czech Republic. With just one ski pass, you can access five linked resorts:
Elevations range from 643 m to 1,260 m. In addition to 17.5 km of groomed slopes, the resort also offers 2.5 km of freeride terrain.
Highlights include night skiing on the illuminated “Protěž” slope, a 3.5 km long toboggan run suitable for day and night rides, and dedicated children’s areas with magic carpets, animations, snow tubing and ski lessons. Around 80–95% of the slopes and 50–70 km of cross-country trails are artificially snow-covered, ensuring good snow reliability.
This resort combines family-friendliness with a wide variety of slopes for all skill levels. Modern infrastructure and diverse activities make Černá hora – Janské Lázně an attractive alternative to more expensive Alpine resorts.
The Czech Republic offers a wide variety of winter sports options. Its ski resorts differ in size, difficulty levels and additional activities, making them suitable for beginners, families and experienced skiers alike. Beyond skiing, many resorts also offer special attractions such as panoramic viewpoints, winter hiking trails and excellent restaurants where you can enjoy Czech cuisine. A winter holiday in the Czech Republic is definitely worth it.
