When travelling to Austria, it is important to be aware of the applicable toll regulations. In general, vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW are subject to the vignette requirement, while vehicles over 3.5 t GVW must pay a distance-based toll. The amount of this toll depends, among other factors, on the distance travelled. To record the distance for this toll, a GO-Box is required. In addition to both the vignette and distance-based tolls, Austria also applies a section toll on special toll routes.
All vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW require a vignette. Vehicles exceeding 3.5 t GVW are subject to a distance-based toll. Below, you will find the different regulations depending on vehicle type.
Motorcycles in Austria require a valid vignette.
Drivers of passenger cars must have a valid vignette and are not required to pay a distance-based toll, as long as their vehicle does not exceed 3.5 t GVW. If your vehicle weighs more than 3.5 t GVW, the vignette requirement does not apply, and you must purchase a GO-Box for the distance-based toll system. The GO-Box must remain activated even when driving on routes that are exempt from tolls (non-toll sections).
Trailers are not subject to the vignette requirement in Austria. However, the total weight of the towing vehicle, such as a passenger car, determines the applicable toll regulation. Passenger cars require a vignette and are not subject to the distance-based toll, as long as the vehicle does not exceed 3.5 t GVW. If the towing vehicle weighs more than 3.5 t GVW, the vignette requirement does not apply, and a GO-Box must be used for the distance-based toll. The GO-Box must also remain active on toll-free (non-distance-based) routes.
The same regulations apply to motorhomes as to other vehicle types. Motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW require a vignette. If the motorhome weighs more than 3.5 t GVW, the vignette requirement does not apply, and a distance-based toll must be paid. To comply, you must purchase a GO-Box, which must remain active even on toll-free (non-distance-based) routes.
Truck drivers must display a vignette and are exempt from the distance-based toll as long as the vehicle, including its load, does not exceed 3.5 t GVW. If the truck weighs more than 3.5 t GVW, the vignette requirement no longer applies, and a GO-Box must be used for the distance-based toll. The GO-Box must remain activated even on toll-free (non-distance-based) routes.
