The Great St. Bernard Tunnel is located in the southern canton of Valais in Switzerland and connects the Swiss town of Martigny via Main Road 21 with the Italian State Road SS27, which leads to the Italian city of Aosta. Construction of the tunnel began in 1958 and was completed in 1964. The official opening to road traffic took place on March 19, 1964.
On the day of its opening, approximately 1,200 vehicles used the tunnel. In 2013, around 620,000 vehicles were recorded in total, corresponding to a daily average of approximately 1,699 vehicles. The tunnel is operated by SISEX SA, a company jointly owned by TGSB and SITRASB. Due to its binational operation, it was decided in 2006 that toll fees would be charged without value-added tax or comparable taxes.
The Great St. Bernard Tunnel is a special toll route and is therefore subject to special toll charges. This means that, in addition to the vignette requirement or heavy vehicle charge, a separate fee must be paid for using the tunnel. Further information about special tolls can be found in our guide.
