Hungary–Romania Border Crossing

The border between Hungary and Romania stretches over 450 kilometers. At the same time, the border also begins at the tripoint with Ukraine and ends at the tripoint with Serbia.

Border controls

Please note that during your trip you should expect (strict) border checks and identity checks between Romania and Hungary. On the one hand, there is a risk of illegal migration, as Romania and Hungary are often used as transit countries for Europe. It should be noted, however, that the strictness of these border checks may change, as Romania has also been part of the Schengen Area since early January 2025. Of course, border checks also exist due to general risks and security regulations, including counter-terrorism measures, customs and trade controls, and national security interests.

Waiting times

In connection with the checks, waiting times may occur, the length of which can be difficult to predict. You should therefore allow extra time for your journey.

Border crossings

The border crossings connect these two countries and their rich history as well as cultural diversity. They are important for cross-border trade, tourism, and daily traffic between Romania and Hungary. Below, we have compiled a selection of important border crossings between Romania and Hungary:

  • Nădlac (Romania) – Ártánd (Hungary) border crossing: This border crossing is one of the most important and busiest connections between Romania and Hungary. It is located on the European transport route E68 and therefore connects the Romanian city of Arad with the Hungarian city of Szeged.
  • Turnu (Romania) – Borș (Hungary) border crossing: Like the previous crossing, this connection between Turnu and Borș is highly relevant for traffic and is particularly important for international travel. Therefore, it is widely used by tourists and truck drivers. The crossing is located on Romania’s western border.
  • Sânnicolau Mare (Romania) – Jimbolia (Hungary) border crossing: While the other two border crossings are mainly of interest to tourists, this crossing is known for its use by regional traffic. It is located south of Timișoara (Romania) and connects Sânnicolau Mare with Jimbolia in Hungary.

Hungary

The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are specific toll road sections.

Hungary: Vignette requirement (or not?)

In Hungary, a vignette is mandatory for cars, car–trailer combinations and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW. This is the so-called e-Matrica (Hungarian vignette), with which the toll is checked electronically via the license plate. You should purchase the e-vignette online before your trip, because if you drive on a toll road without an e-vignette, you may face fines.

Distance-based toll

You must pay the distance-based toll if your vehicle weighs more than 3.5 t GVW. This means that motorhomes, buses and trucks have been required since January 2024 to pay an electronic, distance-based toll calculated via the HU-GO system (electronic toll collection). The distance-based toll replaces the vignette, so you no longer need one.

Romania

The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are specific toll road sections.

Romania: Vignette requirement (or not?)

In Romania, there is an electronic vignette called “Rovinieta” that you need for the Romanian national road network. It is important to know that trailers (car–trailer combinations) do not need a separate vignette, and motorhomes must have a passenger car vignette regardless of their weight. Depending on the vehicle class, you must choose a different vignette and prices vary. You can find more information about vehicle classes in Romania in our guide. Order your digital vignette for Romania easily and conveniently from home with us.

Distance-based toll

In Romania, there is no distance-based toll, but you do need a digital vignette and must consider additional fees for the Danube crossing (special toll route).

Danube crossing: bridge toll (special toll route)

Please note that additional fees apply for the Danube crossing. The Danube flows within Romania and separates the two countries (Romania and Bulgaria) from each other. Therefore, if you want to use one of the many bridges or the ferry to cross, additional charges apply. You can find more information about the special toll in Romania in our guide.
