The Tauerntunnel motorway is located in the southwest of Austria and is a 6546-meter (6.5 km) road tunnel on the Tauern Motorway (A10). Along with the Katschberg Tunnel, the Tauerntunnel forms an important link between Villach and Salzburg.
The Tauerntunnel was originally planned to have two tubes, just like the Katschberg Tunnel. However, during the construction project, it was determined that the budget was insufficient and the traffic volume turned out to be lower than initially anticipated, leading to the decision in 1975 not to proceed with the second tube.
The Tauerntunnel is also a special toll section and is therefore exempt from the vignette requirement. No vignette is needed, but a toll for the use of the Tauerntunnel is still required.
