What is the Gleinalm Tunnel?

In addition to the Bosruck Tunnel, a journey through the Gleinalm Tunnel on the A 9 Pyhrn Motorway is essential. While the Bosruck Tunnel is located in the center of Austria, just before Liezen, Selzthal, and Rottenmann, the Gleinalm Tunnel is situated about 100 km later, between St. Michael in Upper Styria and Kleintal (approximately 50 km before Graz). Similar to the Bosruck Tunnel, the Gleinalm Tunnel operates as a special toll route. Therefore, for the journey through the Gleinalm Tunnel, no vignette is required, but a route-based toll is necessary, which can be purchased digitally from our online shop. The Gleinalm Tunnel features a separate toll lane where the digital toll is recognized by cameras installed on-site at a slightly reduced speed. The removal of the previous barrier also expedites passage through the Gleinalm Tunnel, reducing frequent waiting times and congestion that occurred in the past.

The Gleinalm Tunnel stretches over a length of 8,320 meters (8.3 km). In comparison, the Bosruck Tunnel measures only 5,425 meters (5.4 km) in length. Similar to several other tunnels in Austria (with few exceptions), the Gleinalm Tunnel consists of two tunnel tubes. The daily traffic volume in the Gleinalm Tunnel ranges from 22,000 to 40,000 vehicles, including cars and trucks.

The Gleinalm Tunnel was opened in 1978. The second tube of the Gleinalm Tunnel was inaugurated in July 2017, following several fatal accidents at a permitted maximum speed of 80 km/h, which necessitated the urgent need for a second tube. The second tube was reopened in December 2019 after extensive renovation works. Since both motorway tunnels are located on the A 9 Pyhrn Motorway, using the A 9 does not necessarily require passing through both tunnels. In our online shop, you can purchase the toll for both sections together or individually.

Barrier-free Access

During the renovation works, the Gleinalm Tunnel was optimized, making the separate toll lane wider to facilitate maneuvering for larger vehicles.
