Starting in January 2025, the Brenner Autobahn will only be open for one lane of traffic because the Lueg Bridge, located on the Brenner Autobahn, will undergo renovation.
Not only vacationers will be affected by hours of traffic jams, but supply chains and the economy will also be impacted.
The head of the Austrian motorway company defends his plan, stating that by keeping one lane open, a complete closure will be avoided. This is true, but for 3 years, the bridge will be available in two lanes for 170 days each year and one lane on the remaining days. Additionally, there will be 15 days per year with a truck ban.
This could lead to delivery delays or even a complete halt of some products, and prices would rise significantly. If alternative routes prove feasible, delivery paths might be adjusted, but this is still under assessment.
A proper solution is likely not expected until 2032 when the Brenner Base Tunnel is scheduled to open. Hopefully, by then, the renovation of the Brenner Autobahn will be finished.
It still needs to be determined whether traffic can be alleviated beforehand by shifting to rail transport on other routes.
